Running uphill acts as a form of resistance training that forces an exaggerated hip extension and increased knee drive, strengthening the posterior chain (glutes and hamstrings) and stabilizing connective tissues often neglected on flat ground to optimize running economy.
Hill running also functions as a high-intensity stimulus that forces rapid fast-twitch muscle fiber recruitment and expands aerobic capacity (VO₂ max). The incline pushes your cardiovascular system to work at a higher capacity while also raising your lactate threshold.
The image to the left is an example of the most extreme Enduro-Hills workout I have completed during my summer Half Over-Build Phase. This run included an elevation gain of 2,091 feet with a duration of 2:31 and covered over 15 miles. Being a hybrid combination of long and hill runs, the running economy and physiological benefits of this workout are additive along with the mental edge that comes on race day when the course is much flatter.
Using mobile app tracking, I have established the hill loops summarized in the table below for future workouts without the need to carry along my phone. This information allows me to vary the intensity and duration of my hill workouts by combining the different routes.
For the MAX-Yield Running system, the hill run duration cap is set at 60 minutes for the half and 90 minutes for standard marathon training with options to extend these parameters for the MAX-Half tier and advanced marathon training of the MAX-Endurance tier. These advanced options incorporate the MAX-Yield Enduro-Hills workout as a hybrid run designed to build both endurance (long run) and run-specific strength (hill run). My Enduro-Hills workouts are based upon the hill loop circuits outlined above that I have established and tracked, which range from 0.9-mile to 3 miles.
With the MAX-Foundation tier progressing long runs to just above the half marathon distance, there is no need to scale mid-cycle hill runs beyond the 60-minute duration cap. However, more experienced runners in the MAX-Half tier where I currently train may find it useful to extend their build phase beyond 60 minutes for hill runs by incorporating Enduro-Hills workouts which can replace or supplement long runs. As illustrated in the MAX-Yield Run Log (View Log), my typical training week includes three days of running which consists of the following:
2X Enduro-Hills workouts of 9-15 miles (1:30-2:30 duration)
1X Half-Sim speedwork session completed at or near the full half marathon distance
These complementary workouts provide an ideal polarized pairing of low-intensity, dual-purpose long hill runs with race-specific speed training as I train for a return to the Key West Half in January 2027 with a goal of improving on my sub-90-minute time and a reach goal of sub-87 to match the pace of my marathon PR.
Likewise, experienced runners in the MAX-Endurance tier may also benefit from scaling beyond 90 minutes for hill workouts by incorporating Enduro-Hills. However, the primary focus is building endurance for the full 26.2-mile marathon distance via the Marathon-Sim workout, so Enduro-Hills may offer a periodic variation to long runs rather than completely replacing them.
