If you have spent any time in the distance running community, you know the script by heart: More is always better. Hit the arbitrary weekly volume target. Grind through chronic fatigue, ignore the twinge in your hamstring and sacrifice your family and personal time—all to pursue an arbitrary number within the artificial construct of a 7-day calendar week.
But what if the metric we are chasing is completely wrong? What if the goal isn't volume, but YIELD?
In the financial world, yield is the return on your investment. In manufacturing, it’s the usable output of a process. In running, MAX-Yield is about getting the maximum athletic return on every single mile you log.
If you are tired of the constant cycle of burnout and injury, it is time to stop counting miles and start maximizing your yield.
By profession, I am a pharmacist with over two decades of experience who earned Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and B.S. (Biology) degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. My education focused heavily on analyzing drug/body interactions, biochemical pathways and exactly how the human body reacts to acute stress, cellular damage and recovery.
By choice, I am a competitive Masters distance runner. I have completed 23 marathons over a 17-year period (1995-2012)—including the historic 100th Boston Marathon—with a personal record under 2:55. More recently, I finished the Key West Half Marathon in under 90 minutes (January 2026) and took first place overall at the Johnstown Path of the Flood 14-Miler hybrid trail/road race (May 2026) with a time of 1:40.
The reason I share these recent milestones is not to brag—it's to highlight a fascinating reality: I am running faster, recovering quicker and feeling healthier at age 49 than I did a decade ago.
The secret? I am running significantly fewer days and less volume than traditional plans dictate, including no consecutive run days.
My science education taught me that the human body doesn't understand arbitrary calendar boxes; it understands biological stress and cellular adaptation. My running career taught me that standard training plans actively defy human physiology.
MAX-Yield Running was born out of a necessity to bridge that gap—combining clinical science with real-world race execution to build a sustainable, elite-level framework for experienced and Masters runners who have a life outside the sport.
The foundational flaw of modern running programs is hidden right at the top of your training log: the 7-day, weekly calendar.
The weekly calendar is a human construct designed for labor and commerce, not human physiology. Your muscles, tendons and metabolic pathways don't care what day it is. Yet, traditional plans force high-intensity track workouts, tempo runs and long runs into this rigid box.
The result? Workouts are stacked too close together, cutting off the critical recovery windows required for supercompensation—the biological process where your body actually bounces back stronger than before.
MAX-Yield Running throws the standard calendar away and replaces it with an alternating 2-week cycle.
By shifting to an alternating 2-week cycle, we introduce a systematic spacing of workouts. The power of this cycle lies in its scalability; you can dial your training volume up or down depending on your lifestyle, target distance and performance goals without ever violating the core principles of recovery.
True training efficiency means meeting runners exactly where they are. By structuring MAX-Yield Running into three distinct progressive tiers, you can seamlessly scale your volume up or down based on your target distance, schedule and current race goal.
➊ MAX-Foundation
Target: First half marathon or seeking to improve finish time.
Baseline Requirement: 20+ miles weekly running volume.
Target Goal: 2:30 cutoff (11:27/mile pace) or faster.
Training Timeline: 4-6 months.
➋ MAX-Half
Target: Develop speed for half and establish new personal record (PR) time.
Baseline Requirement: 30+ miles weekly running volume.
Target Goal: 1:45 Finish (8:00/mile pace) or faster.
Training Timeline: 3-6 months.
Signature Workouts: MAX-Yield Half-Sim™ & MAX-Yield Enduro-Hills™.
🏆 Field-Tested Validation: This exact framework secured Mike a 1st Place Overall victory at the Johnstown Path of the Flood 14-Miler (May 2026) and a sub-90-minute performance at the Key West Half (January 2026).
➌ MAX-Endurance: Build endurance for the marathon over a 4+ month timeline.
Target: Strategic training for marathon.
Baseline Requirement: 40+ miles weekly running volume.
Target Goal: Under 4 hours (9:09/mile pace).
Training Timeline: 4-6 months.
Signature Workouts: MAX-Yield Marathon-Sim™ & 90+ Min MAX-Yield Enduro-Hills.
⚙️ Process-Improvement Validation: This tier is the direct distillation of Mike’s 17-year history of training to complete 23 marathons from 1995 to 2012. By analyzing his data and experiences from many years of running 5-6 days per week, Mike stripped away the junk miles to isolate the exact elements that yielded his best times, which include 4X sub-3-hour and 4X 3:00–3:05 finishes. The core of those discoveries is captured in the signature MAX-Yield Marathon-Sim workout.
