Having covered the overview (LINK), Yield Cycle (LINK) and Core Pillar Workouts (LINK) for MAX-Yield Running in the previous three blogs, this post describes the math and multipliers used by the system to structure the Tactical Reset & Build Phase for your half or marathon training.
Traditional distance running plans often treat volume as a badge of honor, accumulating miles for the sake of the ledger while ignoring the steep physiological consequences. The MAX-Yield Running system reverses this equation. We solve for complete cellular and structural recovery first, and then optimize the running volume within the expanded 2-week Yield Cycles.
To understand why this system functions so highly where conventional structures fail, we must look at the mathematical guardrails that govern it: Baseline Volume and Goal Time Cutoffs for the three tiers of MAX-Yield Running.
· MAX-Foundation (Entry Level for Half Marathon): Optimized for training over 4-6 months, this regimen requires a current baseline weekly volume of 20+ miles and a goal time of 2:30 (11:27/mile pace) or faster.
· MAX-Half (Break Personal Record for Half): Optimized for training over 3-6 months, this regimen requires a current baseline weekly volume of 30+ miles and a goal time of 1:45 (8:00/mile pace) or faster.
· MAX-Endurance (Build Endurance for Marathon): Optimized for training over 4-6 months, this regimen requires a current baseline weekly volume of 40+ miles and a goal time of 4 hours (9:09/mile pace) or faster.
These baselines are strict structural prerequisites, not arbitrary milestones. Shifting to a highly concentrated training cycle introduces fewer, high-impact running workouts. To safely handle the structural stress of these targeted sessions without joint or tendon breakdown, your body requires the pre-existing capillary density and tissue tolerance established by these baseline volumes. Similarly, the goal-time cutoffs serve as vital mechanical guardrails for workout duration caps. Because training paces are mathematically derived from your goal time, if that time is too slow, it forces training paces down to a velocity that keeps the runner on their feet for too long to achieve the target mileage.
To translate your baseline parameters into a training plan for a goal race, the mathematical engines of the MAX-Yield Running method are standardized across the Core Pillar Workouts.
MAX-Speed (Tempo Runs, Intervals & MAX-Yield Half-Sim)
The Math: Calculates speedwork volume using a baseline weekly mileage multiplier of 0.2X, increasing by 1-mile increments every 14 days on alternating Yield Days.
The Caps: Speedwork volume is capped at 13 miles or 90 minutes (whichever comes first). Note: Caps exclude walk breaks, warm-up and cool-down.
Half Training Paces: Targeted within a range of goal race pace plus a 15-second buffer.
Marathon Training Paces: Targeted within a range of goal race pace minus 30 seconds, which accounts for speedwork being capped at one-half or less of the total race distance.
MAX-Stamina (Long Runs & MAX-Yield Marathon-Sim)
The Math: Initializes at a baseline multiplier of 0.3X, increasing by 1-mile increments every 14 days on alternating Yield Days.
Half Tiers (Foundation & Half) Caps: Capped at 14 miles or 2:30 hours. Target pace includes a 30-second buffer over goal race pace.
Marathon Tier (Endurance) Caps: Capped at 24 miles or 3:15 hours. Target pace range is goal race pace plus a 30-second buffer.
MAX-Strength (Hill Runs & MAX-Yield Enduro-Hills)
The Math: Governed purely by duration. Convert your baseline weekly mileage directly to minutes (rounded to the nearest 5-minute increment), increasing by 5 minutes every 2 weeks.
The Strategy: Engineered as a continuous, sustained effort rather than explosive hill repeats. There are no target paces or distances.
Half Tiers Duration: Capped at 60 minutes for Foundation and 60+ minutes for the MAX-Half tier which includes the option to incorporate Enduro-Hills.
Marathon Tier Duration: Capped at 90 minutes for standard training or 90+ minutes for the advanced option incorporating Enduro-Hills.
By compressing your training into fewer, high-impact sessions, this method creates the initial illusion of a steep volume decline compared to a traditional distance running plan that may include 4-6 runs per week. In reality, the integrity of the stimulus is preserved, but the density of the training has changed. This the tactical reset of the MAX-Yield Running system whereby a significant portion of the initial volume decline comes from the systematic elimination of mid-week, moderate-intensity recovery runs. The next section illustrates MAX-Math in action for a sample runner profile.
Baseline Volume: 20 miles weekly | Goal Time: 2:30 half marathon (11:27/mile pace)
Paces: Long Run 12:00/mile (Goal +30s) | Speed Run 11:30–11:45/mile (Goal +15s)
Build Phase (Yield Cycle 1) (Weeks 1 & 2): This profile begins long runs at 6 miles (0.3X baseline) and speed runs at 4 miles (0.2X baseline) with hill runs starting at a 20-minute baseline conversion.
Note: This profile serves as the foundational floor of the system, specifically designed for entry-level half-marathoners currently at the 20-mile baseline weekly volume threshold. If you are stepping up to the half for the first time, this is your blueprint.
The entry level half marathoner profile is one of seven core runner profiles featured in MAX-Yield Running which serve as stress-test models designed to demonstrate the mathematical boundaries and progression logic of the Build Phases which are inherently self-regulating. By dynamically tying mileage caps and workout durations directly to your individual training paces, the system automatically adjusts its operational ceilings based on your unique baseline volume and specific race goals.
The Build Phases are not rigid prescriptions to be followed blindly. Rather than forcing your physiology to conform to an arbitrary training calendar, MAX-Yield Running is designed to adapt to your:
Recovery Velocity
Lifestyle & Schedule
Physiological Feedback
