In this blog, we transition from concept to application through the MAX-Yield Run Log (View Run Log), which is a live Docu-Training Sheet built to track, measure and analyze daily training as it occurs.
The Run Log Sheet begins one week after my most recent race, the Johnstown Path of the Flood 14-Miler in late May, launching directly into the high-volume context of my summer super-base build. This Half Over-Build Phase was intentionally designed to construct a deep foundation of endurance and run-specific strength beyond the demands of the half-marathon distance.
In addition to expanding my aerobic foundation for current goals, this over-build phase serves as an early preview of a potential return to 26.2 miles at the January 2028 Las Vegas Marathon. This systemic stress test provides a baseline data point to revisit in late summer 2027, which is shortly after I turn 50 and before a family trip to celebrate my daughter’s 21st birthday in early 2028. While the half remains my primary distance of choice, the convergence of these major milestones presents a unique opportunity for a potential return to my marathon roots.
From this expanded base, my training protocol systematically shifts focus back to the MAX-Half tier in preparation for the Key West Half Marathon on January 17, 2027. My base goal is to run faster than my 2026 time of 1:29:48, along with a reach goal of breaking 87 minutes to match the pace (6:38/mile) of my sub-2:55 marathon PR set in 1999.
To achieve this goal, my training as of mid-July is focused on a mix of 9 to 15-mile (1:30-2:30 duration) Enduro-Hills workouts and 9 to 13-mile Half-Sim speed sessions while adhering to the core recovery principles of this system with no consecutive running days. These complementary workouts provide an ideal polarized pairing of low-intensity, dual-purpose long hill runs with race-specific speed training. Additionally, a family vacation in early August will serve as a one-week training break, leading to an ideal five-month runway. This break from formal training was another factor behind the timing and duration of the Half Over-Build Phase.
Furthermore, my current work schedule affords the flexibility to insert high-impact sessions into weekdays rather than exclusively on a fixed Yield Day such as Saturday. This fluid adaptability is evident throughout the Run Log, which does not strictly alternate speedwork and long runs on the same Yield Day. This flexibility represents a core strength of the system, which is most fully realized in advanced half-marathon (MAX-Half) and marathon (MAX-Endurance) tiers, whereas the MAX-Foundation entry level half marathon tier is optimized by following a fixed two-week Yield Cycle.
The image to the left illustrates my Macro-Periodization Calendar, highlighting focused training cycles of 3-5 months before races which are interspersed with breaks from formal training as a key component of longevity, running for lifelong yield.
Looking strictly at individual daily entries on a log does not reveal macro-level trends. For true insight, we evaluate the summary weekly data analysis tab. Initial tracking in June revealed that training volume had temporarily skewed too heavily toward high intensity. Recognizing this trend, I recalibrated workout cadence to cap high-intensity running at or below 25% of overall training time, leaving the remaining 75% or more strictly dedicated to low-intensity volume.
Note: The Run Log Sheet tracks low-intensity training volume across all non-running modalities (e.g., strength circuit training, stationary bike cross-training and other activities associated with active recovery). This capture provides a precise picture of total aerobic and structural volume while delivering non-impact cardiovascular and musculoskeletal conditioning to complement core running workouts.
The most striking visualization on the dashboard is the Weekly High/Low Intensity Training Volume stacked bar chart. It clearly illustrates the primary structural defense mechanism of the MAX-Yield protocol.
The Protective Gray Zone: Across every week of the cycle, low-intensity active recovery, cross-training and strength work (visualized in gray) completely dominate the total training footprint. Even during peak running density, High Intensity (blue) remained tightly controlled, topping out in early June during an intense high-speed simulation block before being brought back down.
The Polarized Base: During the peak vertical loading week of June 20, low-intensity volume accounted for 90% of the total load.
This auto-regulatory shift highlights the ultimate purpose of tracking live metrics, using real-time biofeedback to capture maximum performance gains without crossing the line into overuse injury. As my training progresses into late summer and fall, the broad foundation built during the over-build phase will be converted into race-specific speed.
The half marathon is a distance where I can train with precision, recover with efficiency and consistently execute at a high level. For the long game of running longevity, the half is where performance and efficiency truly meet for me.
